1906 San Francisco Earthquake Images Posted 02/12/2012

1906 San Francisco Earthquake images posted in the padre art production gallery of the same name . . .

Many of the fires joined together as they neared the Financial District and Knob Hill.  The newly constructed Fairmont Hotel, not even open yet, had survived the earthquake but succumbed to the forest of flames . . .

"I forgot the doomed city as I gazed at The Fairmont, a tremendous volume of white smoke pouring from the roof, every window a shimmering sheet of gold; not a flame, nor a spark shot forth.  The Fairmont will never be as demonic in its beauty again."

These were the impressions recorded by the writer, Gertrude Atherton, as she crossed the San Francisco Bay early that fateful morning . . . Here is the shell of the Fairmont Hotel later that day . . .

__Chinese New Year, Gung Hay Fat Choy or Xin Nian Kuai Le _

However you say it the wishes are for health, wealth, longevity and happiness.

Chinese New Year Day is Monday, January 23, 2012 . . . Year of the Water Dragon . . . Lunar Year 4710

People born in the Year of the Dragon are typically energetic and honest, making them also quick-tempered. The year of the Water Dragon occurs once every sixty years (the previous one occurred in 1952) and affects the traditional traits of the Dragon-born.

Those born in the year of the Water Dragon have a tempered quality to their energetic enthusiasm. They tend to be calmer, more sensitive to others needs and exhibiting an empathy that is not usually found in those born in the other Dragon years.

'Schools at the Festival' Celebrates 20 Years 04/23/2011

Metro Theater 1957, opening night of the first San Francisco International Film Festival.
Metro Theater 1957
The San Francisco International Film Festival, with the help of Schools at the Festival, has been bringing the art of film to students of the Bay Area for two decades.  Thousands of pupils, elementary through high school, attend screenings at the International.

Those students that visit San Francisco for the Festival enjoy hands-on experience at special programs like the animation workshops.  There are . . .
  • Appreciation night for educators
  • Family matinees
  • Special screenings
. . . and many of the filmmakers visit the schools and classrooms around the Bay to bring the International to future directors, actors and screenwriters.

SFIFF 54

Irving Levine grew up in the movie houses of San Francisco.  It's a fascinating world and he wanted to share these precious art films with a larger audience.  At the Metro theater, on a stormy December night in 1957, the San Francisco International Film Festival became the realization of that dream.

"The Captain of Kopenick", by Helmut Kautner, kicked off that first International on December 4, 1957.  Thursday, April 21, 2011 the opening night screening of "Beginners", by Mike Mills, started the 54th year for the SFIFF.

Alex Romanelli, the editor of well-known movie publication Variety, spoke of the SFIFF and San Francisco's love of independent filmmaking;

"Few festivals are more suited to their city than the International.  It’s clearly programmed by those who love film for people who love film."

Schools at the Festival

Visit San Francisco from now through Cinco de Mayo (May 5) to help celebrate 54 years of art film history.  Sundance Kabuki Cinemas are the main viewing venues but there are others throughout The City . . .
  • San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
  • Pacific Film Archive
  • New People
. . . and the Castro Theater will be showing films for the International.  Parties can be found just about everywhere!

Schools at the Festival is just part of one of the many film festivals in San Francisco. . .
