The newly constructed Fairmont Hotel, not even open yet, had survived the earthquake but succumbed to the forest of flames . . . "I forgot the doomed city as I gazed at The Fairmont, a tremendous volume of white smoke pouring from the roof, every window a shimmering sheet of gold; not a flame, nor a spark shot forth. The Fairmont will never be as demonic in its beauty again." These were the impressions recorded by the writer, Gertrude Atherton, as she crossed the San Francisco Bay early that fateful morning . . . Year of the Water Dragon . . . Lunar Year 4710 People born in the Year of the Dragon are typically energetic and honest, making them also quick-tempered. The year of the Water Dragon occurs once every sixty years (the previous one occurred in 1952) and affects the traditional traits of the Dragon-born. Those born in the year of the Water Dragon have a tempered quality to their energetic enthusiasm. They tend to be calmer, more sensitive to others needs and exhibiting an empathy that is not usually found in those born in the other Dragon years. Chinese New Year Celebrations in San Francisco Zodiac at the Zoo, from 10 am to 3 pm, Sunday January 29. Acrobats, Lion Dancing and Yo Yo experts demonstrating their fantastic stunts. Take a self-guided tour to find all of the animals in the Chinese zodiac (even a bearded dragon). Admission is free for anyone born in a year of the Dragon (1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 and 2012). Most of Chinese New Year Festivities occur during the month of February, starting on the 4th at 7:30 pm, with the Miss Chinatown USA Pageant at the Palace of Fine Arts. On February 10, 6 pm, June Quan, Miss Chinatown USA 2011 will pass on her crown at the Miss Chinatown Coronation Ball, being celebrated at the San Francisco Hilton & Towers. Saturday, the 11th (at 5 pm), is the grand Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade. The starting point is 2nd and Market Street. This year’s Dragon (76 meters long) will dance along Geary and Post, leading floats, bands, dancers and other performers to the end of the parade at Kearny and Columbus Streets. The 12th of February (Sunday) features three events . . .

SFIFF 54 Irving Levine grew up in the movie houses of San Francisco. It's a fascinating world and he wanted to share these precious art films with a larger audience. At the Metro theater, on a stormy December night in 1957, the San Francisco International Film Festival became the realization of that dream. "The Captain of Kopenick", by Helmut Kautner, kicked off that first International on December 4, 1957. Thursday, April 21, 2011 the opening night screening of "Beginners", by Mike Mills, started the 54th year for the SFIFF. Alex Romanelli, the editor of well-known movie publication Variety, spoke of the SFIFF and San Francisco's love of independent filmmaking; "Few festivals are more suited to their city than the International. It’s clearly programmed by those who love film for people who love film."
